Mom means so much. “No matter what your nationality is, where you live on the planet, or what your religion is, there are many different words to say it. One of our educators, William, has provided us with a a great synopsis of how the day went. If anyone is interested in the song, “Mama, Mama” in Spanish – here is a short video Mary recorded today of me singing that song.Today we’re going to catch up on Mother’s Day in Ecuador. Mary got phone calls, Skype messages, and emails from all of the kids and we enjoyed another Mother’s Day here in Ecuador! On Sunday we relaxed at home and I made a special dinner for Mary of barbecued steak, langostino, twice baked potatoes, and steamed broccoli. The mother’s in the crowd seemed to appreciate the singing even though the performance took place about an hour after my usual bed-time.Īfter the program at about 11:00 Johnny and his wife from El Eden Restaurant started dishing out plates full of rice and chicken and some pasta with cheese sauce.Īt about 11:30 Mary and I and most of the other gringos said our goodbyes to our Ecuatoriano friends who were just beginning to party and made our way home. Some time after 10:00 this old gringo sang his modified version of, “Danny Boy” and the child’s song, “Mama, Mama” in Spanish. This young man sang some ballads in Spanish at about 9:45. Zambrano was the emcee and several speeches and comments were made by a number of speakers. Pinoche and his group of organizers had roses and gifts for the mothers and candy and treats for everyone. The honored mothers were seated in the front row, but many more people crowded into the block area for the program and celebration. But within the next half hour the crowds arrived. Lorena, a student in our English class, came over from the farmacia and surprised Mary with this nice Mother’s Day present.Īs we have come to accept as normal at 8:30 the seats were in place, but almost no one had arrived. It turns out that the specially honored mothers’ families had paid to have their mothers sit in the front and receive special gifts and be eligible for some drawings for prizes, but many more chairs were arranged for the rest of the town. Mary and I got downtown on Saturday at about 7:30 and the only people we saw were the vendors setting up their stands, David and a couple of the organizers setting up chairs and amplifiers. When I asked him to clarify what he meant when he said that I could sing he told me that I was to be on the program to sing two or three Mother’s Day songs! So, I shot home and Mary found a cute little child’s Mother’s Day song in Spanish that I thought I could learn to perform in front of a few hundred people later that day! I also adapted the words to, “Danny Boy” to make it more of a Mother’s Day song and planned to sing that in English. Pinoche also clarified that the program would start at ocho or ocho y media (8 or 8:30 PM) which we have learned from past experiences means that perhaps by nine or nine thirty the program would start. All food was arranged and provided for free. This year twenty-four mothers from San Clemente were being honored, but the whole town would also take part in the celebration. Pinoche is one of this year’s Dia De Madres fiesta organizers. So early Saturday morning I met up with Pinoche and got more details. We had an especially busy week last week and it was not until Friday that Mary and I started to wonder if there was anything we needed to bring and what exactly did Pinoche mean by saying I could sing. Almost as an afterthought Pinoche added that I could sing too. I asked what would be going on and he told me there would be food, prizes, and singing. He said to make sure that Mary and I came. Dia De Madres in Ecuador is celebrated at the same time as it is in the United States, but here in San Clemente the occasion provides another opportunity for a community wide celebration.Ī week before Mother’s Day our friend Pinoche told me that there would be a big fiesta on Saturday afternoon in the central part of town in front of El Eden restaurant.
